Earning Your Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood

Designed for the working adult the AEC program will provide the skills needed to teach Pre-Kindergarten. Head Starts, private schools and public schools are all looking for qualified early childhood professionals. Take the journey to a new career, study child development, child safety, nutrition and curriculum development all from the comfort of your home computer an any Internet connection.

OkWU is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). OkWU’s education programs are accredited by the Oklahoma State Rengents for Higher Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
h4. Program Overview

The program consists of 7 progressive courses in Early Childhood. Classes are taken on-line one at a time each lasting 5 weeks. Students in this program earn an Associate of Applied Science upon completion of 60 credit hours. The AEC program incorporates standards 1-5 of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the AEC program, you need to provide:

  • Proof of high school diploma or GED. Or have earned previous transferable college credit.
  • Official transcripts from all previous college or university study; an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in previous college work. (The applicant may be admitted on a conditional basis if GPA is below 2.0.)
  • Students enrolling in the Adult Studies program must either own or have access to a computer.


Graduation Requirements

  • Completion of 60 semester credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Payment of all tuition and fees
