Program Overview
TEACH works hand-in-hand with the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s Alternative Placement Program. OKWU provides the classes and skills necessary to survive in today’s classroom. The TEACH program prepares you for the process required by the Oklahoma State Department of Education to receive alternative certification. The TEACH program is designed with the working professional in mind. This program is currently offered on-ground in Tulsa.

What if I Already Possess My Alternative Teaching Certificate?
If you already possess an Alternative Teaching Certificate, you may be required to obtain college credits for specific, state-mandated courses. The courses that comprise the TEACH program may satisfy some or all of your requirements. TEACH Admissions Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to be admitted to the TEACH program, as required by Oklahoma Law:
- Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.
- Applicants must have a baccalaureate major in a field of study that corresponds to an area of Oklahoma certification (liberal arts or general studies degrees do not qualify unless the degree-granting university’s academic vice president or registrar provide a letter verifying a major or equivalent coursework in a certification area).
- Applicants with no post-baccalaureate coursework must have a minimum of two years of work experience in the subject area of specialization.
- Complete an application to Oklahoma’s State Department of Education for acceptance into the Alternative Placement Program. Once eligibility has been determined, an applicant must submit a copy of the written memorandum outlining the plan of study from an Oklahoma Alternative Placement Specialist. (Application and information packet are available at http://www.sde.state.ok.us Click on the Site Index, then go to “Certification (teacher) Instructions” and look for Alternative Certification.
Note: Anyone who has been denied admittance to an approved teacher education program or enrolled in and subsequently failed required teacher education courses necessary to meet the minimum requirements of a teacher education program is not eligible for the alternative certification program.
