Bartlesville, Oklahoma — The Oklahoma Wesleyan University baseball team ended the 2012-2013 season in the semi-finals of the MCAC tournament in Omaha, Nebraska this past weekend. The Eagles finished the season with a record of 31-23.
During the MCAC tournament, seven different Eagles were crowned with All-MCAC honors. Senior Jerett Hardy was awarded as the first team all-conference 1st basemen. Hardy put together a solid senior campaign. He hit .390 with 23 doubles, 3 triples, and a homerun while committing only 4 errors on the year as the everyday first basemen for the Eagles.
Nick Palese was the unanimous pick for the all-conference designated hitter. Nick Palese hit .293 on the year while posting a .349 average within the conference. Palese finished with 11 doubles and 5 homeruns while knocking in 46 runners during the season.
Freshman CJ Gregory was named as the MCAC first-team relief pitcher of the year. Gregory appeared in 23 games as a freshman and logged over 40 innings, all in relief for the Eagles pitching staff. Gregory finished with 8 saves on the year, leading the MCAC in that category. CJ appeared in 11 conference games, posting a 1.28 ERA with an opponent batting average of just .233 during the conference season.
Joining Hardy, Nick Palese, and Gregory with all-conference honors are seniors Jake Palese and Chris McElderry and juniors Jose Ruiz and Cody Riley. Jake Palese was picked as the second team MCAC 3rd basemen. Jake finished the year hitting .311 with 11 doubles, a triple, and a homerun. Chris McElderry was selected as a second team all-conference outfielder.
After a slow start to the 2013 season, McElderry caught fire midway through the season and finished the year with a .371 batting average which included 5 doubles, 2 triples, and 18 stolen bases. Jose Ruiz was named the MCAC all-conference 2nd basemen. Ruiz finished the year with 7 doubles, a triple, and 3 homeruns while driving in 42 Eagles during the 2013 campaign. Cody Riley was also selected to the 2013 MCAC second team as an outfielder. Riley finished the year hitting .327 for the Eagles with 13 doubles, 4 homeruns, and 42 RBI.
In addition to the first team All- Conference selection as relief pitcher of the year, CJ Gregory was voted as the MCAC Freshman of the year. CJ’s numbers on the mound, ability to field his position, and the mentality to pitch in the late innings of the game solidified his argument as the freshman of the year in a conference full of talented freshmen.
The OKWU baseball staff would like to thank this year’s senior class and all of those who were involved with the program during the 2012-2013 season for their hard-work and dedication to the program throughout the year.
