Bartlesville, OK The Oklahoma Wesleyan University Softball team and Head Coach Caty Reeves has announced their 2014 schedule, which includes 2 preseason tournaments and match ups against the top teams in the state of Oklahoma.
After finishing the 2013 season with a program best record of 35-18 (16-4 MCAC), the Lady Eagles look to improve this year while playing a very competitive schedule.
“This year will truly test our team,” says Reeves. “We are playing a much tougher overall schedule than we did last year so that heading into postseason play we are more than ready to compete for the conference title and in the NAIA National Championship or NCCAA National Championship.”
The team boasts 13 returning players, of which all saw quality time on the field last year. With five freshmen and two junior college transfers, experience will be one of the greatest strengths of the team. “We have 14 upperclassmen on this team who have played at high levels – while we are playing nationally ranked teams we will not back down from it.”
OKWU will start off February 11th at home against St. Gregory’s University which finished the 2013 season ranked #16 nationally.
The Lady Eagles will also take on #5 Oklahoma City in a home and home series, starting first in the capital city February 27 and in Bartlesville April 22. Other instate match ups include Oklahoma Baptist University (March 4 and April 5) and Oklahoma Christian University (March 18).
Opening weekend, the Lady Eagles will travel to Fort Worth, Texas to take part in the Cowtown College Classic February 14-15. The weekend preceding spring break sees the team going to Springfield, Missouri to participate in the Evangel University Tournament.
Both will provide opportunities to play a variety of teams for crucial pre-conference preparation. Other non-conference opponents include Ottawa University, Sterling College, Kansas Wesleyan University, Benedictine University, Ecclesia College, Evangel University, and Greenville College.
Conference play opens up March 8th at Central Baptist with whom the Eagles went 2-2 against last year in conference play. The weekend of March 21-22 brings Haskell Indian Nations (4-0) and Central Christian College (4-0) to Bartlesville.
In conference play, two MCAC Crossover tournaments provide the opportunity for OKWU to take on the North schools – Bellevue University (0-1), York College (1-0), and Waldorf College (0-1). The first occurs March 28-29 in McPherson, KS with the second April 11-12 in Bellevue, NE.
Conference play is finished at home against Central Baptist April 4, traveling to Central Cristian April 18, and at Haskell Indian Nations April 19. Senior day will take place April 26 against NCAA Division III opponent Greenville College with a 1:00pm start time.
The MCAC Conference Tournament will take place May 1-2 at the school of the regular season champions. The winner of the conference tournament qualifies for the NAIA Opening Rounds May 12-14.
The Lady Eagles will also participate in the NCCAA Regional Tournament May 6-9 at Oklahoma Christian University in hopes of qualifying for the NCCAA National Tournament in Botetourt, VA May 15-17.
