Mounds High School Senior Ruben Luna signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Oklahoma Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Luna signed the letter in front of a gathering of his biggest fans, including family members and school officials from Mounds and Oklahoma Wesleyan.

He plays short stop, second base, and pitcher for Coach Milt Denny and the Mounds Golden Eagles. Denny said Luna’s batting average is about 360. He is the son of Randy and Tamra Luna of Mounds and the grandson of Ruben and Judy Luna of Mounds and Leo and Maye Dill of Broken Arrow.

The senior standout provides the Golden Eagles with leadership on and off the field, according to Principal Stephen Sturgeon. Coach Denny echoed Sturgeon’s comments and said Luna was a pleasure to coach.

Coach Andy Bettis from Oklahoma Wesleyan said he is glad to get a student athlete like Luna. The university is part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and, like the Mounds team, the school mascot is an eagle.

Luna will have the opportunity to continue the work ethics he has been taught at Mounds to work hard and “soar with the eagles.”
