BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (10-17-09) – Over the fall break weekend, the Lady Eagles volleyball squad didn’t get a break like other students, as they headed one their first Nebraska swing of the season. In the first match on Friday, the Lady Eagles took down York College (Neb.), 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 21-25, 25-14), but falling in Saturday’s match to College of Saint Mary (Neb.), 1-3 (23-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-25).
Against the Lady Panthers on Friday, freshman Mandy Muncy and sophomore Randa Roberts led the team with nine kills each in the four sets. In the balanced offensive match, all but three players on the team recording kills, including Alica Efron, Leslie Smith and Michelle Sanger all had four kills, while Stephanie Lee and Taylor Fisher added two each.
To go along with 15 digs defensively, Lee, a senior, assisted on 27 of the Lady Eagles points. Leading the way on digs was Amber Rouse with 31.
In Saturday’s matchup with College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Neb., the Lady Eagles, now 9-14 overall and 4-4 in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, battled in each set, falling to the team that stands just ahead of them in the conference post-season chase.
Just like the previous match, the Wesleyan offensive balance was important, as Efron and Smith each led the way with eight kills. Also getting in the action was Roberts and Sanger with six, Muncy with four and Lee added a kill. Lee also racked up 29 assists.
Later this week, the Lady Eagles travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face Haskell Indian Nations on Friday, then travel three hours east to take on Central Christian College at Saturday in McPherson.
When facing both squads at home earlier in the season, Wesleyan took down each team in straight sets.
Head coach Sara Kingrey and her squad returns home for a redemption match with Ozark Christian College (Mo.) at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 27.
