BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (2-17-10) — The Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagle baseball team proved on Tuesday that power isn’t everything, as “small ball” helped the Eagles split a doubleheader with Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Mid-America Christian University.
After falling in game one to the Evangels, 2-5, the Eagles answered in the second contest with a 4-1 victory, on a cold day in Bartlesville. With the split, the Eagles are now 4-and-3 on the season, as they head to play Grand View College (Iowa) at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis on Friday and Saturday.
In the win over the Evangels, Thomas Kellner picked up a complete game victory, pitching seven innings and striking out six batters, giving up just four hits, one run and walking a batter.
Eagles victory was due mainly to a balanced offense. Ryan Hutchings led the team with two hits, while Micky Armstrong, Jake Planich and Jonathan Porter each drove in a run. As a team, OKWU reached base safely nine times, none of which were extra base hits.
Oklahoma Wesleyan doesn’t return home until March 6 when they face Sterling College (KS) for a doubleheader. Before that, they play four games against Grand View College, at Northwood (Texas) for three games, then a trip to Weatherford for a match up against NCAA Div. II Southwestern Oklahoma State on March 2.
