Bartlesville, Okla. — The Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles (6-2) defeated Hillsdale Baptist College 12-2 in Wednesday’s game at Doenges Stadium. The Eagles put together a solid day offensively, defensively, and on the mound to run rule HBC in 7 innings.
The pitching and defense combined for a performance allowing 2 runs through 7 innings, while committing no errors. Chad Backward started the game for the Eagles. Backward (1-1) surrendered 2 earned runs on 4 hits and striking out 2 batters in 4.2 innings of work.
Junior Evan Holmes was the first in relief of Backward. Holmes threw 1.0 inning of hitless baseball while recording one punch-out for the Eagles. Tyler Hampton finished the day on the mound for OKWU. Hampton pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing 2 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.
To add to the pitching and defensive effort, the Eagle offense put together a phenomenal day at the plate. The day started off hot for the Eagles as they opened up the game with 3 runs in the bottom half of the 1st inning.
Freshman Josh Donato (2-3) got the inning started by singling to left field. After a stolen base, Jose Ruiz (2-3) plated Donato with a base hit to right. Ruiz was scored by a Cody Riley (1-2) double, and Jerett Hardy (2-3) doubled in Riley before the close of the first inning.
The Eagles offense continued to add runs throughout the day, including a 7 run bottom half of the 3rd. There were numerous contributors to the offensive explosion, including a 3-3 day from senior short-stop Mason Feeler.
Jake Palese continues to swing a hot bat, going 2-3 at the plate for the Eagles. Junior Andrew Murphy, senior Nick Palese, senior Landon Cloud, senior Nick White, and freshman Asa Manship all added a hit per player contributing to a 17 hit effort for the OKWU Eagles.
The Eagles will host NAIA #25 Doane College in a 3 game series this weekend beginning at 12:00 noon Friday. Saturday’s double header will also begin at noon.
