Oklahoma Wesleyan University is honored to engage in a new partnership with Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council (FRC) in Washington, D.C. FRC “seeks to advance faith, family, and freedom in public policy and the culture from a Christian worldview” and the partnership includes a number of opportunities: from internships and networking to conferences such as the Values Voter Summit (VVS).
This fall, OKWU will serve as the Student Sponsor for the Values Voter Summit, named by CNN as “one of the conservative movement’s marquee events”. OKWU is excited about this opportunity and will be sponsoring a group of our students to attend the summit, held September 9-11 in Washington, D.C. The summit, and partnership with FRC as a whole, “gives our students amazing opportunities to engage with the cultural leaders who are fighting for religious and economic freedom,” shared Dr. Gentry Sutton, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. “The…opportunities this partnership affords our students are second to none in the world of Christian higher education.”
Established in 2006, the Values Voter Summit exists to “inform and mobilize citizens across America to preserve the bedrock values of traditional marriage, religious liberty, sanctity of life, and limited government”. VVS has drawn crowds of more than 3,000 attendees and numerous high-profile speakers from the political world to media personalities and more. This year’s speakers include George Barna, Dr. James Dobson, Star Parker, Todd Starnes, Senator James Lankford, Dr. Piper, Tony Perkins, and many others.
As student sponsors of VVS, OKWU will be involved in the summit in a number of ways, including hosting a student mixer, providing students with a one-on-one opportunity to discuss real world issues and policies with experts in the field. Additionally, Dr. Piper will be joined in a breakout session during the summit by well known conservative blogger, Matt Walsh. Dr. Piper and Walsh will focus their conversation of “Ideological Fascism and Intellectual Freedom”.
“It is an honor for our students and the University as a whole to partner with FRC and their efforts to impact our culture.” Said Dr. Robert Herron, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. “We are looking forward to this opportunity to come alongside them and engage citizens with the truth of Christ and the truth of Scripture in a new and exciting way.”
