Mission & Passion

In his infinite wisdom, God blessed me with a teacher’s spirit and the ability to handle the English language. If I would have been in charge of my calling, I would have made me a .300 hitter for the Kansas City Royals, but I am glad that God knows better than I, because interacting with college students in the writing classroom is much more fulfilling than my short baseball career ever was. In a culture that constantly spews complicated and confounding information and often cheapens the gift of language, I consider it an honor and a serious responsibility to teach people how to communicate effectively and with integrity.

In my doctoral dissertation, I examined how applying argumentative writing strategies to written expressions of faith might increase students’ confidence about sharing their faith verbally. My study confirmed what was already known: argumentative writing fosters critical thinking, and critical-thinking skills improve confidence. I am passionate about using the writing classroom to help students live and confidently defend the Christian faith wherever God calls them.
