Grant monies come from Federal, State, and Community sources. We encourage you to pursue grants because they do not have to be repaid after your education is complete!
Grants are funds that are not repaid. There are a variety of Federal and Institutional grants offered to qualified OKWU students.
PELL Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is given to students who demonstrate financial need based on FAFSA information. The grant for full-time students ranges from $555 to $5,550 per year.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant
This federal grant supplements the Pell Grant and is given to students with high financial need. These funds are limited. OKWU recommends having your financial aid file complete by March 15. The SEOG awards range from $400 to $2,000 annually at OKWU.
TEACH Grant
Through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program that provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.
In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant. IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of the TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) was disbursed. For more information on the TEACH Grant
Oklahoma Tuition Assistance Grant
The Oklahoma Tuition Assistance Grant (OTAG) is awarded up to $1,300 per year to eligible students. It is awarded based on financial need to residents of the state of Oklahoma who are attending colleges or universities within the state. To be eligible, it is important to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by March 15, but OKWU recommends filing by March 1. Grant eligibility and policy are determined by a state agency and not by the institution.
Oklahoma Tuition Equalization Grant
The Oklahoma Tuition Equalization Grant (OTEG) program is a need-based grant for Oklahoma residents enrolled as full-time undergraduates at an Oklahoma not-for-profit, private or independent institution of higher learning. Grant amounts are $2,000 per academic year or $1,000 per academic semester and are awarded by OKWU from a block grant of limited funds. To be eligible, the student must complete their FASFA, listing Oklahoma as their legal residence, be a first-time, full-time freshman, have family income of $50,000 or less, meet the standards of the State Regents’ Policy on Residence Status in Oklahoma State System of Higher Education and meet the institution’s satisfactory academic progress requirements. Partial funding of this program comes from LEAP funds.
Oklahoma’s Promise
Oklahoma’s Promise (formerly called OHLAP) is for students who applied, were accepted, and who met OHLAP requirements as stated by the Oklahoma State Regents. The application process takes place when the student is in the 8th, 9th or 10th grade. For the 11-12 school year, the state pays $116 per credit hour.
