"THE WRONG SIDE OF THE DOOR: WHY IDEAS MATTER"
LOS ANGELES, October 6, 2009 – Dr. Everett Piper, president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University is known as something of a multi-tasker. He not only runs Oklahoma Wesleyan University, he’s also a frequent guest on talk radio programs around the country and maintains a busy speaking schedule, addressing all of the issues of the day from health care to the environment and education. But his most ambitious project to date and one that is likely to test his multi-tasking skills is the upcoming release of his first book, published by Oklahoma Wesleyan University Press, The Wrong Side of The Door: Why Ideas Matter.
In the book, Piper makes the case for why an objective moral standard is needed in order for any nation, including America, to survive:
“Postmodern political correctness is really nothing more than an unvarnished ploy to consolidate power among society’s elites and thus, to restrict the individual freedoms and rights of the general public,” says Piper. “Without an objective moral standard (above and beyond the subjective feelings and wishes of those in power), there is no freedom, there is no justice, and there is no liberty.”
Piper has kept a busy schedule recently including numerous appearances in media outlets ranging from the conservative, faith-based Frank Pastore radio program to the liberal leaning Air America Radio Network. Piper also recently traveled to West Hollywood where he appeared on a panel following a screening of the controversial documentary Lord, Save Us From Your Followers, where he debated author William Lobdell, author of the book “Losing My Religion” and famed Hollywood publicist Michael Levine and founder of the LBN E-Lert.
Responding to charges that Christians were hypocrites, Piper countered: “Imagine you want to know what a fish is like. You go to a beach and what you see are a lot of dead, smelly, decaying fish. Should you then surmise from this that ALL fish are like this, or that this is how the ‘ideal’ fish should be? Of course not! It’s dishonest to judge the truth of something by looking at the ways in which broken humans have distorted it.”
“It was a real honor to debate the important issues of our day with such talented and smart people as William Lobdell and Michael Levine,” noted Piper. “We disagreed vigorously all evening long but we had a good time doing so. I wrote my book for the same reason: to begin a dialogue and engage thoughtful people to consider ideas they perhaps hadn’t considered before. I look forward to hitting the road and letting people know about my new book.”
Emerging as a leading spokesperson for a new generation of traditionalists, Piper challenges today’s progressive thinking by reminding us that a classical understanding of the word “liberal” presumes that liberty and liberation can only be enjoyed by free people in the context of self-evident truths and unalienable rights. To this end one of Piper’s essays in his new book The Wrong Side of the Door: Why Ideas Matter is actually entitled, “Why I’m A Liberal and Other Conservative Ideas.” Piper’s book is now available.
