Romans 1:20 states, “Since God made the heavens and the earth, His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly visible in His creation.” Thus, we explore the logic and structure of God’s creation, in order to worship and serve Him with deeper understanding.
In keeping with the institutional mission, the Department of Science and Mathematics uses classroom devotions, special courses, classroom discussions, and faculty participation in religious convocations (chapel) to encourage students and faculty to explore issues at the interface of the Christian faith and the various academic disciplines of mathematics and the natural sciences.
The major in Mathematics at OKWU is designed for flexibility and breadth. Students adopting this major often take one or more minors from other areas such as the sciences, business or computing. The math major at OKWU provides excellent preparation for graduate work in mathematics, statistics and biometrics, as well as provides a solid foundation for those who may wish to pursue graduate degrees in engineering or programming.
The Mathematics Education degree at OKWU prepares students for certification as a teacher of mathematics at the secondary school level. Those who hope to eventually teach mathematics at the college level will need to plan on obtaining at least a master’s degree in mathematics.
The study of biology provides a foundation for students with a variety of career goals. The Biology major at OKWU is designed as a broad overview of the life sciences and is well-suited for students who wish to purse graduate work in biology, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine
The major in Chemistry at OKWU is designed to meet the needs of the student who is seeking employment upon graduation as a chemist in government or industry. The major also provides the level of preparation needed for a student who wishes to pursue graduate studies in chemistry or related fields, including medical research, pharmacology, and materials science. Because of the related mathematics background, students majoring in chemistry often take a minor in mathematics.
Flexibility and breadth are the primary advantages offered by the major in General Science. With suitable attention to admission requirements, this major can provide needed preparation for admission into a variety of graduate and advanced professional programs from physical therapy to veterinary medicine and even traditional and non-traditional medical school programs. This major is also a good choice for students who may wish to take minors within or even outside the sciences in preparation for graduate work in fields such as business and law, where a background in the natural sciences can be valuable.
