*College President Sounds the Alarm: Federal Takeover of Student Loans tied to Healthcare Vote puts Every Christian College at Risk*

In 30 years of educational leadership with both state universities and private Christian colleges, Dr. Everett Piper has never seen a threat as ominous as the healthcare vote to Christian Colleges. Tied to the passage of the healthcare bill potentially set for a vote as early as Sunday is a government takeover of student loans.

ENDA becomes the law of the land then ALL religious organizations that receive ANY form of federally funded revenue should be concerned for their very existence,” Piper said. The proof is found in Barak Obama’s own statements during the presidential campaign of 2008 at the Saddleback Civil Forum.

Obama then explicitly said that no Christian College should be permitted to “discriminate” (i.e. hire only Bible believing Christians) if it benefits from ANY federal funds. Almost all students who attend Christian colleges and universities qualify for PELL Grants, Workstudy, or other forms of federal financial aid. Over 90% of the students at Oklahoma Wesleyan University receive this type of financial aid. Piper believes given the President’s statement at Saddleback, Christian colleges will be ruled to be out of compliance with Federal non-discrimination laws. He contends that every Christian College should fear for its very survival with this vote and few people know about it.

Do any of us really believe that the religious exemption that Christian schools have enjoyed since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 will still be the final word on this matter?, asks Piper. Can we possibly believe that Catholic/Evangelical or even Jewish universities will continue to be able to “discriminate” in hiring only those of a shared faith?

If the Fed successfully takes over the student loan industry (which it is poised to do by coupling it with the current Health Care Bill), then ALL students in the United States will have just lost their access to nearly ALL private loan funding of their college education.
