Unless one lives under a rock it would be impossible to ignore the political season that all within our country have lived through over the course of the past 24 months or more. The promises, the passion, the people. The endless stump speaches. The agurments for “change.” High expectations and hope for some – Fear and anxiety for many. All of us wanting our country and our leaders to succeed in seeking justice, loving mercy and walking humbly in the defense of life and liberty as given to us by our Creator. Everyone appreciating the strides we have taken toward such ideals but many of us disappointed in what seems to be a parade of politicians stumbling over misplaced values and a misunderstood virtue.
At such a time as this I think we who are believers in the lordship of Jesus Christ and in the authority of His Word would be wise to remember something that the rest of our culture seems to have forgotten – something obvious that has been proven over and over again throughout the course of history – something that is indisputable as you watch each day’s evening news: All human beings have limitations and all leaders have an inescapable liability. In Biblical terms, as the apostle Paul states in his letter to the Romans, “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Nothing that has the thumbprint of humanity on it will ever truly attain our dreams of perfection. Nothing will ever measure up to a President’s promises or a Party’s pretensions.
But… all is not lost.
At the risk of using a phrase that is surely overworn through our recent days of “campaign speak” – There is hope! Hope is found in the power of ideas and principles. It is not found the promises of politicians. As we embrace the truths that are tested by time, confirmed by reason, validated by experience and proven by Scripture we can truly be hopeful.
At Oklahoma Wesleyan University, we believe that our salvation is not found in powers and principalities, presidents, parties, or politics. No, at OKWU we boldly and unapologetically teach that our “Hope is Built on Nothing Less than Jesus’ Blood and Righteousness.”
Yes there is Hope, tremendous Hope and it is found in passing on the right ideas to the next generation. Hope and progress can only truly be found in the Primacy of Jesus Christ, the Priority of Scripture, the Pursuit of Truth and the Practice of Wisdom as the foundation for all learning and living.
As you consider where you would like your student to attend college, please remember Oklahoma Wesleyan University and our mission. I sincerely believe that there is no better place to send your students and that there is no better investment for our future. Ideas have consequences. Teaching the right ideas bears good fruit, teaching the wrong ideas bears bad. What is taught today in our colleges will be practiced tomorrow in our culture and our churches, our courtrooms and our communities. The next generations’ hope or heartache starts in today’s classroom.
Thank you for standing with us at Oklahoma Wesleyan as we work to reclaim our culture for Christ and His Kingdom!
