BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The No. 5 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan baseball team opened their conference season with a sweep over McPherson College at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium.
The Eagles defeated the Bulldogs by scores of 7-0, 2-0, 12-1; allowing just seven total hits over the three games.
Game 1 – OKWU 7 McPherson 0
The opening game of the series was all about the starting pitcher Ryan Sandifer. The junior made his third start of the season on the mound allowing just two hits and striking out 12 batters in the complete game shutout. Sandifer holds a 0.93 ERA on the season ranking amongst the best in the country.
At the plate, Austin Sojka led Oklahoma Wesleyan by going 1-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored. Chris Tapia went 1-for-1 with a home run and two runs scored from the five hole, while Colton Kelly finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Juan De La Cruz made the most of his pinch hit at-bat as he went 1-for-1 with two RBI’s.
Game 2 – OKWU 2 McPherson 0
In the second game of the three-game set, the pitching from Oklahoma Wesleyan continued to dominate. Kyle Fimbrez got the start on the mound and faced the minimum amount of batters he could in the 2-0 victory. Fimbrez allowed just one hit and struck out seven batters to earn the complete game shutout.
Oklahoma Wesleyan compiled five hits as a team led by Austin Sojka who went 2-for-2 from the leadoff position with two home runs. John Lantigua, Hunter Henry, and Rylee Peterson recorded the other three hits for the Eagles. Lantigua also collected two stolen bases on the base paths as OKWU had three total in the game.
Game 3 – OKWU 12 McPherson 1
The bats came alive in the series finale for Oklahoma Wesleyan as they crossed the plate 12 times en route to the 12-1 win over McPherson. Second baseman Nick McGrew went a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI’s, and three runs scored from the three hole. Colten Kelly added another home run as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Ryan Lujan collected three hits in his three at-bats with two RBI’s and three runs scored, and Juan De La Cruz recorded an RBI double to round out the top hitters for the Eagles.
Two-way player Tyson Cronin started on the mound and went 5 1/3 innings allowing just one hit and struck out six. Landon Williams and Tyler Shumpert came into relief and shut down the game for Oklahoma Wesleyan.
Oklahoma Wesleyan will travel to Wichita, Kansas for a three-game series against Friends University on Friday, March 2nd and Saturday, March 3rd. First pitch for Game 1 on Friday is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
