Hardwork Pays Off For Eagle Wrestling at Mustang Invite

The Eagle Wrestling team has put in some long hard hours these past couple of weeks to prepare themselves to make their run through the spring semester. During this past weekend, the Eagle matters muscled out third place at the Mustang Invite (Conway, Ark.) to bring home a trophy — the first-ever earned by the young OKWU wrestling program.

“It was awesome,” an energized R.J. Sweat reported on Sunday night, adding his Eagles entered only half its squad, due to illness and injury.

OKWU collected 54 points, trailing only Brewton-Parker College (112) and the University of the Ozarks (76). Hannibal LaGrange University (44.5) finished fourth.

OKWU ascended to the third spot despite being minus star grappler Dayton Marvel (141 pounds), who is ranked in the Top 10 in the nation.Five of Sweat’s combatants finished in the top three of their weight divisions — four of them battled for the title. Another two finished fourth.

Sweat’s roster of rugged warriors that battled to top-four showings included: Grant Sullivan (149, 2nd), Austin Daniels (157, 3rd), Grant Williams (165, 2nd), Dailen Presgrove (174, 2nd), Ridge Smith (184, 2nd), Austin Andrew (165, 4th) and Codey Cooper (149, 4th).

The Eagles will hit the grind again as they prepare to head to the Missouri Valley Invite in Marshall, Missouri this weekend (Jan. 18th-19th) to continue their 1st year run.
