BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The No. 5 ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan baseball team picked up a 6-4 victory over Lyon College to open the 2018 season.
Each team scored in the opening frame before Lyon held a 2-1 lead after two innings of play. The Eagles got a run back in the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2. In the top of the eighth, the Scots from Batesville, Arkansas had two runners cross the plate to take a 4-3 lead. After OKWU tied the score on an RBI single, the nine-hole hitter Colton Kelly stepped up to the plate and turned out to be the deciding factor. Kelly sent a ball over the center field fence for a go-ahead two-run home run and the Eagles held on for the 6-4 win.
Kelly ended up going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI’s, and three runs scored. Lead-off hitter Nick McGrew went 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Tyson Cronin went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s. John Lantigua went 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly and RBI, while Chris Tapia went 1-for-4 to round out the hitting.
Ryan Sandifer started on the mound and went seven innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven batters. Lizandro Cruz came into relief and picked up the win, while Tyler Shumpert earned the save after facing only four batters in the ninth.
No. 5 Oklahoma Wesleyan will host Lyon College on Saturday, February 3rd, for the final two games of the three-game series. First pitch for Game 2 is scheduled for 12:00 pm at Doenges Memorial Stadium.
