On June 30, 2014, the United States Supreme Court ruled that David and Barbara Green have the right to run their company, Hobby Lobby, in a manner consistent with their religious convictions. In a 5-4 decision the Greens’ religious freedom, as well as yours and mine, was upheld.

All people of all faiths, and even those of no faith, owe the Green family a note of gratitude for leading in the defense of our Constitutional rights. We all should send David and Barbara Green a note of thanks.

Private business owners who believe they are obligated to manage their companies in a manner consistent with their religious convictions should be thankful for the Greens.

Fathers and mothers who believe they are duty-bound to protect the lives of their children, whether they be born or unborn, should be thankful for the Greens.

Women who believe it is none of the government’s to presume to enter the privacy of their bedrooms and, thereby, force them to pay for contraception that they do not want and will never use should be thankful for the Greens.

Everyone who believes that sexual behavior is a religious discussion and that our religious convictions bind us to a specific moral code of conduct should be thankful for the Greens.

Buddhists and Baptists, Mormons and Methodists, Calvinists and Catholics, Anglicans and even Atheists should all be thankful to the Greens for standing before the Supreme Court of the United States and saying “you cannot tell us how to practice our faith!”

Those who believe in Oklahoma’s Constitution, which clearly affirms, “Perfect toleration of religious sentiment shall be secured…” should be thankful for the Greens.

Those who believe in the United States Constitution which says “Congress shall make no law… prohibiting the free exercise of religion” should be thankful for the Greens.

All who believe in the Declaration of Independence and its words that “we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights” and that first among these rights is the right to life and liberty should be thankful for the Greens!

All who cherish their God-given right of religious freedom uncompromised and unmaligned by the State should be thankful for the Greens.

Every man, woman and child of the United States of America – every citizen of our free republic – everyone who believes that we are a nation of laws and not of men – every person who understands that justice is always grounded in the “laws of Nature and Nature’s God” and that injustice is always the result of the arbitrary and capricious use of political power – all of us, regardless of our race, religion, gender, age or vitality should be thankful that the Green family has stood up and fought in our defense. We should be grateful for their conviction. We should thank them for their courage. We should all breathe a sigh of relief that someone has finally stood up and said to the government, as did our fore fathers in the days of old; “you have no legal or moral authority to force anyone to compromise their faith… We will obey God rather than men…”

Oklahoma Wesleyan University stands with the Greens in the fight for religious freedom. We too have filed a lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act and its blatant compromises of our First Amendment rights. We, like the Greens, have said, “No, we will not pay for nor will we provide abortion-inducing drugs to our employees.” Yes, we seem to be as David standing before Goliath; a small and insignificant threat confronting what appears to be an insurmountable foe, but the Greens have reminded all of us to have confidence. We know that our freedom is in the hands “ of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel!” Goliath can defy him all he wants but we know the end of the story.
