Title IX
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefit of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” -Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the regulations promulgated thereunder, prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally-funded education program or activity. Sexual harassment, which includes incidences of sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking and retaliation, is a form of sex discrimination under Title IX.
Because Oklahoma Wesleyan University accepts federal student loans as payment of tuition, it is obligated to comply with Title IX requirements. More importantly, OKWU is steadfastly committed to providing a campus environment free from discrimination, including discrimination based upon sex. The University provides support and resources to students, faculty, and staff to address concerns related to sex discrimination, including incidences of sexual assault and sexual harassment. That support and those resources are listed below.
OKWU is deliberately intentional and committed to making the OKWU campus a place that fosters positive, respectful, healthy, and safe relationships among all members of the campus community, as Christ has taught us to do.
Religious Exemption. As a matter of transparency, Oklahoma Wesleyan University discloses to all students, prospective students, parents, the campus community, and the public that it is entitled to legal protection under Title IX’s statutory religious exemption and that it will avail itself of that exemption as and when appropriate, especially with respect to issues of sexual orientation, gender identity, marriage, and the sanctity of life. Therefore, the University will comply with, and enforce, the terms of Title IX, but will always make that compliance and enforcement subject to the terms and allowances under the statutory Title IX religious exemption.
