Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN)

OKWU’s online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN) is a journey of knowledge, personal experience, and faith; it is designed to not only improve your professional character but also your self-awareness as a caregiver. Our nursing program is built on the foundation of Christian belief and advances students’ existing foundations of knowledge and experiences, giving credit for what they already know and providing deeper understanding of the art and science of nursing. Our curriculum is also infused with biblical lessons and values consistent with the theology of The Wesleyan Church. Students who have completed Vizient AACN Nurse residency program can earn course credit.

Life or Death

Having a BSN is associated with lower mortality rates, fewer medication Errors, lower readmission rates, shorter length of stays, and other cost savings (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2023).

Changing and Complex Healthcare System

Complex needs of patients and the healthcare system in general require a higher level of education in the nurse. The Institute of Medicine has called for increasing the number of BSN prepared nurses to 80% in order to meet complex needs of patients and the healthcare system.

Employment Opportunities

According to the 2020 National Nursing Workforce Survey BSN prepared nurses make more per year than ADN prepared nurses. More and more workplaces are requiring a minimum of a BSN degree. In fact, Magnet hospitals require all managers and nursing leaders have a minimum of a BSN and give preference to hiring RNs with a BSN degree.

Earn Your BSN

“The exciting thing about a nursing degree from OKWU is that you can begin in the BSN program and build on your learning throughout the MSN and DNP programs, and graduate as a Kingdom nurse leader with the knowledge to impact patient outcomes while using up-to-date evidence-based research.”

– Sandi McDermott, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

CLINICAL PRACTICE EXPERIENCES

Indirect and direct practice experiences take the place of the traditional clinical rotation learning experience in the RN to BSN program. These experiences typically involve hands-on learning, such as interviews, physical assessments, family assessments, community assessments, and shadowing nurse leaders. Completion of these hours are flexible and may be designed to work around the students’ personal schedule. During the clinical courses, students will demonstrate an advanced level of understanding of nursing science and integrate this knowledge into nursing practice.

Examples include:
  • Intercultural Nursing: Interview and Cultural Assessment
  • Management in Nursing: Improvement Project Plan Proposal
  • Health Promotion Across the Lifespan: Family Assessment and Plan of Care
  • Health Assessment: High fidelity screen-based simulations
